Our Real Ales

We cellar a constantly changing selection of local micro-brewery produced real ales. We have regular ales and seasonal guest ales too. Here are some of the local artisan brewers that we serve. Find us in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Here are the reasons why David selects these brewers.

Red Cat

Red Cat are one of the newer breweries on the scene, based in Winchester. They're a collaboration between Andy Mansell and Iain McIntosh, the brewer from the old Cheriton brewery of Cheriton Pots fame. Their style is different from the Cheriton ales, being noticeably more 'hoppy'. We are pleased to stock the Prowler Pale regularly, which is a lighter beer at 3.5, and very quaffable.

We have a long association with our friends at Ballards Brewery. Fran, the head brewer and Keith the draymen, have both been with the brewery for the last thirty-odd years. Fran loves his malts reflected in the style of beer they produce. He's even brought samples of ingredients and shared his knowledge and experience with our locals. It's good traditional ale, and they produce a 'dry hopped' version especially for us, based on their best bitter.  Dry-hopping is when hops are added to the barrel that the beer is transported and served in, and we sell it as the 'Coach and Horses'. Mind you, Keith has been known to grumble about having to get the hops out of the barrels again when we return them. Thanks your patience, Keith! It's worth it.

Burning Sky

Mark Trenter is the head brewer and owner at Burning Sky. He used to be the head brewer at the respected Dark Star Brewery. All of his beers are very different, tending towards the stronger side. An excellent session ale is Plateau. Its SG is 3.6 and it's popular with the locals.

Triple fff

Triple fff are another Hampshire Brewery, based in Alton. They love their hops and they majored on New Zealand varieties, giving their ales a lemony flavour. We think they have got it right with Moondance which we readily stock - named after the song of course - along with others.
